Halal options in Marbella: eating Italian without giving anything up

Finding halal food in Marbella is not always easy. Most Italian restaurants build their menu around pork — prosciutto, mortadella, guanciale, bacon — and a guest who does not eat it is left with a plain Margherita and little else.

At Pizzeria Desidero we took a different route. We are not an entirely halal restaurant and we will not claim to be: our standard menu does include Italian pork charcuterie. What we do offer is a proper halal menu option, with certified products and a separate handling procedure, so that any guest can eat properly rather than make do.

How our halal option works

When you ask for the halal option:

• Our chefs and pizzaioli change gloves before preparing your order.
• We use only 100% certified halal meat products.
• The rest of your dish — dough, San Marzano tomato, mozzarella, vegetables — stays exactly the same.

The certified halal range

• Halal beef and chicken — for grilled dishes and pasta.
• Turkey salami — mild and delicate, the natural stand-in for classic Italian salami on a pizza.
• Smoked turkey breast — lean and lightly smoked, excellent added after baking.
• Turkey sucuk — spiced and aromatic, superb blistered in the wood-fired oven.
• Beef sucuk — the stronger, more traditional version, for anyone who wants real character.
• Beef pastrami — rich and intense, ideal with rocket and Grana Padano.

Being honest about what we are

This matters, so we will say it plainly:

• We are not an entirely halal restaurant. The standard menu includes pork products, prepared in the same kitchen.
• We do offer a certified halal option, with the products listed above and a change of gloves, for anyone who prefers or requires it.
• Just ask. Our staff know exactly which dishes can be prepared with halal products and which cannot.

We would rather be clear and lose a booking than promise something we cannot back up. Guests who keep halal generally appreciate this more than a vague claim.

What you can order

Pizzas with halal charcuterie

Any pizza on our menu that would normally carry Italian salami or ham can be made with turkey salami, smoked turkey breast, sucuk or beef pastrami instead. Wood-fired base, San Marzano tomato, Fior di Latte mozzarella — the pizza itself does not change.

Grilled chicken

Our halal grilled chicken with lemon and caper sauce is one of the most requested dishes among our Muslim guests. Marinated in lemon, garlic and Mediterranean herbs, seared on a very hot grill, rested before serving.

Pasta with halal meat

Our fresh pasta can also be prepared with certified halal beef.

Naturally suitable dishes

A good part of our menu contains no meat at all:

• Margherita, Marinara, Quattro Formaggi, Vegetariana — the classic pizzas.
• Fresh pasta with tomato and stracciatella, or pesto with pine nuts.
• Burrata, Caprese, Greek salad, artisan focaccia, provolone al forno.

Gluten-free base is available for every pizza (+€3.00).

Why this matters in Marbella

Marbella hosts a large number of visitors from the Gulf, North Africa and Muslim communities across Europe, especially in summer. Most of them are not looking for a halal restaurant as such — they are looking for a good restaurant where they can eat something.

That is the gap we try to fill: authentic Italian cooking, wood-fired pizza, fresh pasta, and a real halal option so that nobody at the table is stuck with the same dish every time.
